Tungsten carbide is a powder metallurgical product which is sintered in a vacuum furnace or a hydrogen reduction furnace with cobalt, nickel or molybdenum as the binder, arranging various commonly used materials according to the hardness and toughness. As shown in the figure, composite crystal diamond (PCD) has the highest hardness, followed by cubic boron nitride (CBN) and cermets (Al203, SiC, Si3N4, etc.). The fracture toughness of superhard materials is low. The tungsten carbide has a good hardness and toughness in a wide range. Therefore, it has become the most widely applicable hard material and is widely used in engineering and tool products.
